Cognitive misgivings

The cognitive questioning approach is a combination of thought journaling and fact-checking that uses Socratic questioning to allow us to decide whether our thoughts are logical or irrational or not. Divide one piece of paper or page in a journal into three sections to practice cognitive questioning. This is where you can write down single or multiple thoughts that you think might be irrational, harmful, or negative. You should write down any facts in the middle section, which either supports or contradict the thoughts you are examining. What facts call your thoughts into question? What facts underpin the thinking? Once you've gathered as much evidence as you can make a judgment as to whether the thought was based on fact or opinion or not. The description which thoughts are based on fact with a checkmark put in the first section next to them, or with an x to mark which thoughts are based on opinion only.
